Kempton Park Retail

This Kempton Park retail project called for transaction counters that could take repeated contact, trolley knocks and daily cleaning without looking tired. We fabricated the counters in engineered quartz and solid-surface, then handled templating, fitting and practical aftercare notes for the store team.

A busy Kempton Park counter line with no room for fuss

The client was a retail operator in Kempton Park fitting out a front-of-house counter zone that had to work hard from opening to closing. The space needed clean lines for customer service, durable worktops for receipts, cards and packaging, and finishes that would hold up under constant wiping and handling.

The brief leaned toward a commercial finish rather than a domestic one. The counter fronts had to read neatly from the floor while the work surface stayed practical for staff, with enough depth for registers, small equipment and paperwork. We also had to work around the store layout, which left limited room for wide returns and extra fixing points.

  • Retail transaction counters for customer-facing use
  • Material mix: engineered quartz and solid-surface panels
  • Service areas sized for tills, point-of-sale equipment and staff movement
  • Finish requested: clean, neutral and easy to maintain

The measurements that shaped the build

Johan Ngwenya led the templating visit and measured the counter runs, corners, returns and sink-free service zones for the back work area. Digital measuring and site templating mattered here because the shop shell had a few tight angles and a couple of uneven wall lines that would have shown up at install if we had guessed.

We mapped the slab layout so the joins would fall in sensible places and the visible sections would read as one long, tidy run. That planning also helped with material use, especially where the customer-facing side had a longer span and the inner prep side needed a different cut sequence.

  • Site templating for exact wall and floor conditions
  • Digital measuring to confirm runs and returns
  • Slab layout planning to reduce offcuts and awkward joins
  • Cut lines set for visible grain and colour consistency

The project called for good edge definition without a bulky appearance. We worked with a moderate slab thickness suited to retail counters, then shaped the edges so they felt firm in hand and did not look overbuilt. Seams were placed where the staff flow would not catch them every hour, and where maintenance would stay straightforward.

Fabrication choices for daily retail wear

In the workshop, the quartz sections were cut for the main counter tops and the solid-surface pieces were used where a more forgiving finish helped with shaping and integration. That combination gave the client a practical balance: quartz for the hard-wearing public surfaces and solid-surface for sections that needed smoother forming around edges or joins.

We cut clean sink apertures where the back-of-house handwash point needed one, and we prepared the hob cut-out service only where it was required for the store preparation zone. The retail counters themselves stayed uncluttered, with service openings kept deliberate and tight. Edge profiling was kept neat and functional, not decorative for its own sake.

  • Cutting and fabrication done in our Strijdom Park workshop
  • Edge profiling chosen for durability and easy wiping
  • Sink cut-outs prepared where the layout required them
  • Seam joining positioned away from the highest-touch sections

Heat and stain care were part of the handover conversation. Quartz copes well with normal retail contact, but hot pans, chemical spills and harsh scouring still need attention. Solid-surface is useful in busy service areas too, though it benefits from prompt cleaning if tea, coffee or packaging adhesive lands on it. We made sure the client team understood what daily care should look like, without turning it into a complicated maintenance routine.

Installation in a live retail setting

Candice Mthethwa coordinated the installation sequence so the team could work around the store setup with minimal interruption. The old counter sections had to be removed, the new units brought through a constrained access route, and the final fit completed with the floor and wall finishes already in place.

The installation team checked levels carefully before fixing anything permanently. In retail work, even a small slope shows up fast when customers lean on a counter or staff slide items across it. Once the units were seated correctly, we joined the tops, sealed the edges and set the splashback runs to close cleanly against the wall line.

  • Countertop installation completed on site
  • Splashback fitting included at service wall sections
  • Final sealing done at joints, edges and corners
  • Levels checked before and after fixing

The full sequence ran over a few weeks from first site visit to finished fit-out. That included templating, workshop fabrication, delivery coordination and installation. The timing also gave the client room to keep the retail floor active where possible, rather than shutting down more of the front counter than necessary.

How the finished counters changed the front of house

The result was a counter line that looked crisp from the customer side and stayed useful behind it. The surfaces presented a tidy, professional face to shoppers while staff gained a hard-working worktop that could take signing, bagging, packing and repeated cleaning through a normal retail day.

The join positions disappeared into the rhythm of the layout, and the edge detail gave the counters a solid feel without turning them heavy or clumsy. The splashbacks kept wall surfaces protected in the busier prep sections, and the whole area now reads as one continuous service point instead of a collection of separate pieces.

  • Customer-facing finish stayed neat under daily use
  • Staff work zones gained cleaner, flatter support surfaces
  • Wall areas behind the counter became easier to wipe down
  • The layout supports faster service and tidier handover of goods

For a retail store, that balance matters. The counter has to look presentable at the front and stay forgiving behind it when the day gets busy. This job delivered both, with materials and detailing chosen for use rather than show.

The next similar retail brief we would handle the same way

On a similar retail project, we would keep the same emphasis on accurate measuring, sensible seam positions and careful edge selection. We would also keep the material mix practical, using engineered quartz where the highest wear sits and solid-surface where shaping or integration improves the result.

The most useful lessons from Kempton Park were about access, finishing and service flow. When counters must serve the public and support staff at the same time, the layout details matter as much as the stone itself. That means setting cut-outs, returns and splashbacks with the working day in mind, not just the drawing.

  • Confirm access routes before fabrication starts
  • Plan joins where they stay out of the main touch path
  • Match edge profiles to the amount of daily handling
  • Keep aftercare advice plain, so the team can use it immediately

Countertop questions

What materials were used on the Kempton Park counter project?

We used engineered quartz for the main hard-wearing surfaces and solid-surface where shaping and integration suited the layout better.

Were cut-outs and joins part of the scope?

Yes. The job included site templating, sink cut-outs where needed, seam joining and careful edge profiling for the finished counters.

Does Plastone work outside Kempton Park?

Yes. We fabricate in Strijdom Park, Randburg and install across Gauteng, including Johannesburg, Sandton, Pretoria, Midrand, Fourways, Centurion and Roodepoort.
